Choose the product and sheen together
Paint colour gets most of the attention, but the finish changes how a room looks and how its surfaces are maintained. Do not specify only “white paint” in a home renovation quote. Record the manufacturer, product line, colour code and sheen for each surface. Two products with similar sheen names may not perform or look exactly alike.
Begin with the room's use. Note where hands touch walls, where chairs rub, which areas need regular cleaning and where strong side lighting reveals repairs. Discuss the existing surface condition with the painter before choosing a highly reflective finish.
Use common choices as a starting point
Benjamin Moore's finish guide describes low-sheen options for ceilings and walls, eggshell for many living areas, and higher sheens for details such as trim and doors. Reflective finishes can make surface imperfections more noticeable. Actual suitability depends on the selected product, not its sheen name alone.
- Ceilings: consider how light falls across patches and joints.
- Living rooms and bedrooms: compare the desired appearance with cleaning needs.
- Hallways: discuss scuff resistance and maintenance with the painter.
- Doors and trim: select a coating intended for the surface and expected handling.
- Kitchens and bathrooms: confirm the product is intended for those conditions; sheen is not a substitute for suitable ventilation or correcting moisture problems.
Test the combination in your own room
Approve a representative sample before the full order. Look at it in daylight and after dark with the room's usual lights. Compare the sample next to flooring, cabinets and existing trim. Record the approved combination so an installer does not have to infer your choice from a photograph on a phone.
If the project includes repaired walls, ask how preparation and priming will be handled. A fresh coat cannot be expected to conceal every uneven patch. Agree on the intended appearance and review a representative area early, when adjustments are easier.
Plan for touch-ups and cleaning
Keep labelled leftover paint where the manufacturer permits safe storage, and record the product and colour formula separately. Ask for the manufacturer's curing and cleaning instructions. Touch-ups may remain visible because of age, application, lighting or coating differences; discuss whether an entire wall needs repainting rather than assuming a small spot will disappear.
